Medtronic Announces Availability of Crescent Instrument Set

MEMPHIS, Tenn.--(HSMN NewsFeed)--Medtronic, Inc. (NYSE:MDT ) today announced the U.S. market availability of the Crescent(TM) Instrument Set for use in orthopedic surgeries. This set of precision inserting and tamping instruments, trialing instruments and derotation and extraction instruments may be used by spine surgeons during construct insertion when performing a transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) and other procedures.

"The Crescent Instrument Set gives me the next generation of interbody instruments when I perform a TLIF or other spinal procedures. The instruments are streamlined and easier to use than earlier instrument sets and can help me complete my cases more quickly by reducing the time my patients spend in the operating room," said George Frey, M.D., of the Colorado Comprehensive Spine Institute in Englewood, Colo.

Among other features, the Crescent Instrument Set offers:
  • Bullet-nose shaped trial and distractors that allows for easy insertion.
  • A ball tip inserter for easy inserting, tamping, and final positioning.
  • Straight and 15 degree offset inserter attachment options.
  • Consistent 10mm anterior-posterior width trials for all construct lengths.
  • Minimal Access Spinal Technologies (MAST(TM)) friendly instruments.
  • Derotation tools to reposition an over-rotated surgical construct.
  • Extraction tools to safely remove a surgical construct.
When used in a minimally invasive procedure, the Crescent Instrument Set could benefit patients by potentially reducing blood loss during surgery and potentially allowing for quicker recovery times.

"The Crescent Instrument Set gives me an easy insertion of constructs without the need for dural or neural retraction," added James D. Schwender, M.D., of the Twin City Spine Center in Minneapolis.
