New GI Diagnostic Poised to Challenge Current ''Gold Standard''

SmartPill Prepares for Product Launch

BUFFALO, N.Y.--(HSMN NewsFeed)--Jan. 16, 2006--The world of medical device diagnostics just got a little bit smaller - in fact, it's just about the size of a vitamin pill. It's called the SmartPill and it's the latest advance in the field of gastroenterology.

Specifically developed as a tool to aid in the diagnosis of Gastroparesis or delayed emptying of the stomach, the SmartPill pH.p Capsule is an ingestible medical device that provides a non-invasive alternative to the traditional diagnostic standard, gastric emptying Scintigraphy, which exposes a patient to radiation through a series of gamma scans.

When ingested, the SmartPill pH.p Capsule captures biomedical data from within a patient's entire gastrointestinal (GI) tract and wirelessly transmits that data to a small receiver worn on a belt clip. The SmartPill pH.p Capsule senses pH (acidity) and pressure from within the patient's GI tract, enabling gastroenterologists and researchers to more accurately diagnose and understand GI motility disorders such as Gastroparesis.

Dr. Braden Kuo, Director of the Gastrointestinal Motility Laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston said, "The SmartPill is non-invasive, easy to administer, well-tolerated diagnostic that will make a significant impact on the ability to get the information that a doctor and a patient need to improve their overall treatment outcomes."

The SmartPill pH.p Capsule is part of the SmartPill GI Monitoring System. SmartPill Corporation submitted its 510(k) to the FDA in mid-December 2005, and, pending FDA release, the SmartPill GI Monitoring System will be available for sale in the US in late Spring 2006.
