ZONARE Medical Systems Appoints Schoelgens Managing Director Europe

Industry Veteran to Expand Revolutionary Zone Sonography(TM) Technology in One of World's Largest Ultrasound Markets

VIENNA, Austria, March 2 (HSMN NewsFeed) -- ZONARE Medical Systems, a developer of next generation ultrasound technology, will announce the appointment of Cornel Schoelgens as Managing Director Europe at the annual European Congress of Radiology (ECR) being held March 3-7, 2006. Schoelgens joins ZONARE with more than 20 years of experience in the area of diagnostic imaging. He will be responsible for expanding the company's revolutionary Zone Sonography(TM) technology throughout Europe, one of the world's largest ultrasound markets.

"We are pleased to have such a highly-respected ultrasound veteran join the ZONARE team," said Douglas Tefft, vice president International for ZONARE. "Cornel's extensive experience and excellent track record will be of significant benefit in bringing this revolutionary new ultrasound technology to the European market."

Prior to joining ZONARE, Schoelgens held various positions of increasing responsibility at GE Medical Systems and Acuson. As managing director of Acuson, he was in charge of establishing the company as a major player in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Under his leadership the German division of Acuson developed into the largest subsidiary within the company's international business.

Most recently, Schoelgens served as managing director for SonoSite in Germany, Europe's largest ultrasound market. Schoelgens received an electronic engineering education and holds a biomedical degree issued by the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs, State of Baden Wuerttemberg.

"By combining the quality of traditional high-end cart systems with the flexibility and workflow optimization of hand-held units, ZONARE has the right technology to address the challenges that health care systems face worldwide," Schoelgens said. "Additionally, ZONARE's Zone Sonography technology allows unique diagnostic capabilities, such as Zone Speed Technology and Retrospective Processing. I am convinced that ZONARE's approach will be changing the way medicine is practiced by taking ultrasound to the next milestone of quality while simultaneously reducing cost of ownership."

Zone Sonography technology has allowed ZONARE to bring the first Convertible Ultrasound(TM) platform to the industry with superb image quality. Clinicians are able to instantly convert the z.one system from a full- featured, cart-based unit into a premium compact ultrasound system with all the performance of substantially larger and more expensive ultrasound units, yet, with greater portability and clinical flexibility than conventional compact systems.

Combining a fundamentally new advance in ultrasound, Zone Sonography technology coupled with the z.one platform's radically new physical design provides the maximum flexibility offering significant clinical and workflow solutions for a wide variety of customer challenges. The z.one platform's Zone Sonography software-based architecture ensures that its performance and applications will increase as improvements in processing power become available. This allows for fast, convenient upgrades in clinical capabilities, keeping clinicians at the forefront of diagnostic capabilities as well as protecting their investment.

For example, ZONARE is introducing unique new Zone Speed Technology (ZST) at ECR this year which is enabled through Zone Sonography technology. Not all bodies image the same with ultrasound. Wall thickness, fat layer and tissue attenuation affect the way ultrasound sound waves travel through an individual's body. Now, as an industry first, ZONARE offers ZST, the ability to automatically adjust the sound speed based on differences in a patient's body habitus which, in turn, immediately optimizes the clinical image.

"We look forward to substantially expanding this economical and unprecedented technology within Europe," said Tefft. "We believe the ultrasound community will greatly benefit from Zone Sonography technology and proprietary capabilities such as ZST. We know Cornel and his outstanding team will be tremendous assets in delivering these unique technologies and supporting our customers throughout this major ultrasound market."
