First Wearable CPAP Device for Sleep Apnea Treatment Launched by Hoffman Laboratories

LOS ANGELES, March 20 (HSMN NewsFeed) -- Hoffman Laboratories, LLC, announced today that it will introduce the world's first wearable CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) device for the treatment of sleep apnea at Medtrade Spring, Las Vegas, March 22, 2006 (Booth No 1066). The lightweight BreatheX(TM) CPAP device (patent pending) provides 1-2 nights of therapy with its built-in, rechargeable battery, and is mobile, wearable and comfortable. CPAP users will no longer need to be "plugged in" to a bedside flow generator with a six-foot hose.

According to Helen A. Kent, President, Progressive Medical, San Diego, "The BreatheX allows sleep professionals to provide a device that truly matches the modern, mobile lifestyle of CPAP users. This product will truly change the way we treat our patients with sleep disordered breathing."

BreatheX users will enjoy greater freedom of movement wherever they sleep: in their beds, on the couch, or in many other sleep environments -- such as while traveling, camping, boating, or staying with friends or in hotels. Because the BreatheX -- which can be used with most interfaces on the market -- looks more like a pillow than a medical device, users won't experience the same mental barriers to acceptance and compliance that they often do with traditional CPAP devices.

Dennis Nasto, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Hoffman Laboratories, stated: "Although the industry trend is toward smaller, less obtrusive, and easier to use CPAP devices, the basic configuration -- a bedside CPAP unit, a 6 foot hose, and a patient interface -- hasn't changed for 20 years. We're offering an alternative, in particular for those patients who decline treatment using conventional CPAP therapy or are noncompliant."

There were substantial engineering challenges to developing a wearable CPAP device. Traditional CPAP motors are too inefficient to operate off a small battery pack, and they produce too much noise, heat, and vibration to be used close to a patient. To overcome these obstacles, the BreatheX relies on a highly efficient, patent pending, motor/blower design. This design lends itself to using a lighter, more comfortable headgear and nasal interface system (510K clearance pending), which will also be displayed at Medtrade.

In 2002, Mr. Hoffman sold Servo Magnetics to ResMed. The technical staff at Hoffman Laboratories has over 50 combined years of experience designing, developing, and manufacturing electrical motors for CPAP devices.
