Viking Systems, Inc. 3Di Vision System Enhances Laparoscopic Surgery SkillsTime and Accuracy Improvement of Laparoscopic Skills Using EndoSite 3Di Presented at European Association of Urology Annual Congress, Paris, France
SAN DIEGO--(HSMN NewsFeed)--April 7, 2006--Viking Systems, Inc., (OTCBB:VKSY ), a manufacturer of 3D laparoscopic vision systems for use in minimally invasive surgery, announced today the presentation of data supporting the benefit of three-dimensional vision while simulating laparoscopic prostatectomy procedures in a surgical training program.
The study, performed at the University of Rochester Medical Center, Department of Urology, Rochester, New York, demonstrated that inexperienced laparoscopic surgeons had a clear advantage learning laparoscopic techniques when using the Viking Systems, Inc. EndoSite 3Di Digital Vision system compared to conventional 2D laparoscopic systems. Hiten R. Patel MD, University College Hospital, Institute of Urology, London and John Joseph MD, University of Rochester Medical Center, Urology, Rochester, New York presided over the study and presented these results.
"In this age, when laparoscopic surgery is fast becoming the procedural standard-of-care, we as a surgical community must take an interest in training future surgeons in this ever changing field," stated Dr. Patel. "As shown in our study, the 3Di system will allow us to efficiently train future laparoscopic surgeons to meet this rising demand."
The study included 15 surgical residents who performed 5 validated laparoscopic training exercises. With each exercise, the study showed a significant difference (p less than .05) when measuring Time of Task and Accuracy of Task using the 3Di system compared to a 2D system.
