Varian Medical Systems Receives FDA 510(k) Clearance on New Trilogy Tx(TM) and Trilogy(TM) Treatment Machines for Expanded Range of Medical ConditionsLatest Clearance Permits Marketing Trilogy Devices for a Broader Spectrum of Clinical Indications, Including Any That Can Be Treated With Stereotactic Radiosurgery
PALO ALTO, Calif., May 23 (HSMN NewsFeed) -- Varian Medical Systems, Inc. (NYSE: VAR ) has received FDA 510(k) clearance that permits the use of the company's high-energy, ultra-precise Trilogy(TM) linear accelerators on an expanded range of medical conditions. The clearance also marks the introduction of Varian's new Trilogy Tx(TM) Image-Guided Radiosurgery (IGRS) model designed specifically for surgeons.
Varian's Trilogy and Trilogy Tx machines now can be used for Stereotactic radiosurgery as well as precision radiotherapy for lesions, tumors, and conditions anywhere in the body when radiation treatment is indicated.
"With this new clearance, physicians can begin to provide Trilogy Treatments(TM) for functional lesions like trigeminal neuralgia and other non-cancerous conditions," said Lester Boeh, vice president and general manager of Varian Surgical Sciences. "The prior FDA clearance for the Trilogy device was limited to benign and malignant cancers, and arteriovenous malformations.
"This expanded FDA clearance for the Trilogy and Trilogy Tx machines demonstrates our commitment to meeting the needs of image-guided radiosurgery," Boeh said. "Future enhancements to the Trilogy Tx device will focus on functionality that is important to the surgeon." A prototype of the new Trilogy Tx model was exhibited at the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) annual meeting last month in San Francisco.
