TomTec Introduces Its New 4D Solution for Right Ventricular Diagnostics

MUNICH, Germany--(HSMN NewsFeed)--June 1, 2006--TomTec Imaging Systems GmbH is introducing its 4D RV-Functionę software, for right ventricular function analysis. The 4D RV-Functionę software is easy to use and enables fast and reliable measurements of RV functional parameters basing on 3D echocardiographic datasets.

The current limitations in right ventricular diagnostics are mainly caused by the complex shape of the RV and can be overcome with this new 3D technology.

TomTec worked with leading cardiologists and paediatricians to develop an application that meets the growing demand for better and more accessible quantifications of right ventricular function. Right ventricular function is important in cases such as heart failure, pulmonary disease and congenital heart disease, where it has proved itself as a major determinant of clinical outcome. Fast and accurate quantifications have an immediate application in managing and treating patients with such conditions.

The "gold standard" for assessing right ventricular function is MRI. However, the limited availability, high costs and time-consuming evaluation associated with MRI have limited its usefulness.

On the other hand, 2D echocardiographic techniques for quantitative analysis of the right ventricle are easier, low cost and relatively fast. However they are limited by the complex shape of the right ventricle. It is difficult to approximate the geometry accurately from a 2D data set, which makes analysis cumbersome, reduces accuracy and, as a result, this means intra-observer variability is high.

TomTec's new technology uses three-dimensional ultrasound data sets to combine the ease and speed of Echocardiography with the accuracy of MRI. The software calculates a three-dimensional right ventricular surface model automatically from the endocardial contours in the 3D data set. It uses this model to measure right ventricular end diastolic volume, end systolic volume and ejection fraction.

"For the first time in right ventricular diagnostics it seems to be possible to overcome the current 2D echocardiographic limitations and to offer the doctors unprecedented diagnostic possibilities in adult as well as in paediatric cardiology" said Frank Schlau, TomTec's Senior Vice-President for Sales and Marketing.

Rolf Bauman, TomTec's Product Marketing Manager adds, "Assessing risk, monitoring disease and timing interventions are becoming more and more important. These need maximum accuracy and reliability in RV assessment. Three-dimensional analysis, as performed with the 4D RV-Functionę software, can help clinicians manage these crucial clinical questions."
