Dr. Surles Brings Extensive Solution Development Experience to Company's Management TeamSAN DIEGO--(HSMN NewsFeed)--July 13, 2006--Viking Systems, Inc. (OTCBB: VKSY ), a designer, manufacturer and marketer of high-performance laparoscopic vision systems for use in minimally invasive surgical (MIS) procedures, has appointed Mark C. Surles, Ph.D. to the newly created position of Vice President, Advanced Systems.
Viking Systems is currently building a highly differentiated, valued segment of the surgical market through the expansion of its exclusive Infomatix(TM) surgical platform technology. Dr. Surles will work directly with Viking's executive team and will be responsible for the development and execution of several new programs and development initiatives targeted at cost-effectively addressing the surgeon's need for integrated information, imaging, and surgical control in digital operating rooms (ORs) of all sizes and capabilities.

Prior to joining Viking, Dr. Surles worked as a strategic development consultant to software, medical device, and technology companies, both private and public, developing strategic plans, identifying sales channels, and attracting financing. Before that, Dr. Surles worked in marketing and business development for Elsevier MDL, a subsidiary of Reed Elsevier, where he focused on leading new business expansion and discovery informatics for portfolio companies. He was also the Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer of Interactive Simulations, Inc., a software company that provided software for pharmaceutical chemistry. Prior to that, he researched software for interactive simulation and protein visualization at the University of California at San Diego.
Dr. Surles received his Ph.D. and M.S. degrees from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and his B.S. degree from the University of Richmond, from which he graduated summa cum laude. Dr. Surles has authored articles in numerous industry publications.
