Healthcare Industry News: Leksell Gamma Knife
News Release - July 18, 2006
The Ottawa Hospital Regional Cancer Centre to Improve Cancer Treatments with New Elekta Synergy(R) SystemsATLANTA, July 18 (HSMN NewsFeed) -- The Ottawa Hospital Regional Cancer Centre (TOHRCC) will install two Elekta Synergy® systems this summer, allowing clinicians to treat cancer with more precision and confidence using radiation therapy. TOHRCC is a cancer treatment and research facility serving patients in Ottawa and Eastern Ontario.
Elekta Synergy® is the first image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) solution, revolutionizing radiotherapy by offering integrated 3D volumetric imaging at the time of treatment. By imaging patients in the treatment position during the actual time of treatment, Elekta Synergy® is able to offer significantly greater treatment accuracy and higher confidence that the intended therapeutic dose is delivered to the patient as planned. Elekta was the first manufacturer to start research on IGRT, the first to have systems in clinical use, and the first to bring these solutions to market.
"We constantly search for new and better ways to treat cancer with the goal of achieving better control of this serious disease," said Greg Doiron, Clinical Director, TOHRCC. "The advanced technology found in Elekta Synergy®, which integrates imaging at the point of treatment, will give our clinicians a real advantage in accomplishing this objective."
The Elekta Synergy® systems were procured under a new four-year purchase agreement with Cancer Care Ontario (CCO), an agency which advises the Ontario government on all aspects of cancer care.
"We are pleased to have finalized our agreement for radiation treatment systems with CCO and to see it being implemented at The Ottawa Hospital," says Mark Symons, General Manager for Elekta Canada. "Elekta has a strong presence in Ontario with our Hospital Information Management Systems supplied by our software company, IMPAC Medical Systems. With the addition of our state-of- the-art radiation treatment systems, TOHRCC can expect to achieve and retain a high level of departmental integration, especially as the equipment technology evolves with time."
