CardiacAssist Places TandemHeart(R) PTVA(R) System at Three New Medical Centers

PITTSBURGH, July 21 (HSMN NewsFeed) -- CardiacAssist, Inc., announced that it has placed the TandemHeart® PTVA® System percutaneous left ventricular assist device (LVAD) at three new medical centers. More than 60 hospitals across the U.S. and more than 70 worldwide now use the TandemHeart System for critical ventricular support.

The three new CardiacAssist Centers of Excellence are:

* The Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
* Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Ga.
* St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson, Md.

The TandemHeart System is designed to help patients survive high-risk procedures and other cardiac interventions without undergoing major surgery. The device has received FDA 510(k) clearance for short-term use and is the only FDA approved device of its kind in the U.S.

"We're pleased to have both of these outstanding cardiac care facilities join our centers of excellence that are now performing the TandemHeart System procedure," said Michael Garippa, president and CEO of CardiacAssist.

Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center is the first facility in New Hampshire to carry the TandemHeart System; Emory Hospital is also the first in Georgia to carry the system.

The Heart Institute at St. Joseph Medical Center is ranked among the nation's Top 100 Heart Hospitals by independent healthcare ranking organization Solucient.

The TandemHeart System helps restore blood circulation through a cardiac catheterization procedure in as little as 30 minutes. The resulting increase in blood flow is up to five liters per minute (lpm).

The TandemHeart System is fully reimbursed by Medicare under existing DRG codes. The device can be placed rapidly in the cath lab or operating room, providing effective, reliable temporary circulatory support for critically ill patients.

To date, more than 600 uses of the system in 28 countries at 70 different facilities by 120 different physicians have been performed.
