Healthcare Industry News: cardiac monitor
News Release - August 1, 2006
Cardiac Science Deploying Powerheart(TM) AEDs in Michigan School DistrictsBOTHELL, Wash., Aug. 1 (HSMN NewsFeed) -- Cardiac Science Corporation (Nasdaq: CSCX ), a global leader in advanced cardiac monitoring and external defibrillation products, announced today that its Powerheart(TM) Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are being deployed in more than 130 public school districts throughout Michigan. Cardiac Science will supply 442 Powerheart AEDs to Michigan elementary, middle and high schools. Schools purchased the devices with funds from a Michigan Department of Homeland Security grant.
"We know AEDs can enhance public safety," said Garry D. Norris, vice president, marketing. "According to the American Heart Association, the chances of survival from sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) diminish 7-10% every minute, and the average survival rate for out-of-hospital SCA is only 6 percent. However, municipalities that deploy AEDs have experienced survival rates up to 7 times the national average. In the hands of the average layperson, Cardiac Science's reliable, easy to use AEDs provide the capability for schools and communities to successfully improve their response to SCA."
The use of a defibrillator to shock the heart back into normal rhythm is the only effective treatment for sudden cardiac arrest, and several peer-reviewed studies in leading medical journals have demonstrated that defibrillation within the first few minutes of out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest significantly improves the likelihood of a victim's survival.
Powerheart brand automated external defibrillators provide reliable, safe, and easy to use cardiac monitoring and defibrillation technology. Powerheart AEDs feature RHYTHMx(TM) software which detects abnormal heart rhythms, determines whether they are life-threatening, and only delivers a shock when needed. Powerheart AEDs also feature the patented RescueReady® technology, which automatically tests the device on a frequent basis to ensure continued functionality. Powerheart's STAR® Biphasic Waveform Technology provides levels of escalating energy customized to the patient. Powerheart AEDs are used by hospitals, police and fire departments, as well as many public access facilities including major corporations, public agencies, airlines and airports, arenas, schools, hotels, casinos and consumers.
