Healthcare Industry News: Spinal Fixation
News Release - September 26, 2006
Triage Medical Completes Clinical Trial for the Least Invasive Method of Spinal Fixation
Product Launch Planned at NASS MeetingIRVINE, Calif. & SEATTLE--(HSMN NewsFeed)--Triage Medical, Inc. announced today that it had completed its clinical trial for the Company's Percutaneous Lumbar Stabilization ("PLS") System. This study included 105 patients in 21 centers across the United States.
To the Company's knowledge, the PLS system is the only percutaneous method of fixating the spine as a part of a spinal fusion procedure. Rather than open surgery or a conventional minimally invasive procedure requiring 6-8 small incisions or ports, the Triage PLS System requires only one small access port for either a single or multi-level fusion/fixation procedure.
Commenting on the results of this study, Dr. Kingsley Chin, Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania, said, "As a spine surgeon with experience developing minimally invasive techniques, I am impressed with Triage's BONE-LOK® Technology and the simplicity of the instrumentation. The technique is simple once the surgeon gets comfortable with localizing the starting positions of the implant trajectories on anterior posterior and lateral plain radiographs. My patients are usually amazed by their comfort level immediately after surgery and find it strange that they do not have a greater sense that they had surgery on their backs."
In addition to being the least invasive method of Spinal Fixation, the PLS System provides as strong or stronger fixation than conventional Spinal Fixation devices (e.g. pedicle construct systems), shortens the length of time required to complete the spinal fusion procedure and reduces the overall cost of spinal fusion compared to other techniques.
Triage plans to introduce the PLS System at the annual meeting of the North American Spine Society ("NASS") to be held in Seattle, Washington on September 27-30, 2006. More than 7,000 spine care providers and industry representatives will be attending this key annual event.
Triage is also developing a Percutaneous Cervical Stabilization ("PCS") System and a Percutaneous Dynamic Stabilization ("PDS") System. Both of these systems are currently under clinical investigation. All of these systems utilize Triage's patented CLASP (Compression Locking Anchor with Secondary Purchase) Technology and Teleport Percutaneous Access Technologies. Triage has 13 issued patents and 21 patent applications pending before the U.S. Patent Office.
Triage Medical, Inc. is a closely held private company based in Irvine, California. Triage develops and markets products based upon CLASP Technology and TELEPORT(TM) Access Technology for a broad range of orthopedic applications.
