Medtronic to Aid Treatment of Older Adults Through Aging Spine Care ProgramMEMPHIS, Tenn.--(HSMN NewsFeed)--Medtronic, Inc. (NYSE:MDT ) announced today a comprehensive program aimed at facilitating spinal care for older adults. The program, encompassing the development of new technologies and sponsorship of research and education initiatives, acknowledges the growing global population and unique care needs of patients in the so-called "aging spine" segment. As part of this Aging Spine Care effort, Medtronic will feature certain new treatments through display at the 2006 North American Spine Society (NASS) meeting in Seattle, September 26 - 29. Medtronic will also sponsor a surgeon education course entitled "Management of Osteoporotic Spinal Deformity" during the meeting.
In the United States alone, it is estimated that more than 11.5 million older adults have degenerative spinal conditions, including stenosis, spondylolisthesis, kyphosis, and scoliosis. Surgery may be the elected treatment option for some of these individuals; indeed, more than 50,000 underwent spinal fusion therapy in 2005. Care requirements for patients are in some cases influenced by other health factors, such as softer bone (i.e., osteopenia or osteoporosis), cardiovascular disease and frailty.
Medtronic's Aging Spine Care platform will provide surgeons with advanced treatments for older adults seeking a return to more active and fulfilling lifestyles. New technologies will offer capabilities enabling or addressing:
- Sustained fixation and decompression.
- Reduced invasiveness (through Minimal Access Spinal Technology (MAST(TM)) and Interventional Spine treatments).
- Adjacent level health.
CD HORIZONŽ LEGACY(TM) PEEK Rod System, a semi-rigid technology for reduced stress on the bone/screw interface.
- CRESCENT(TM) Instrument Set, a MAST(TM)-friendly system for insertion of implants more compatible with soft bone.
- TSRH-3DŽ PLUS MPA(TM) Spinal System, for highly controlled manipulation of the spine.
- MAST(TM) and Interventional Spine technologies, including the ARCUATE(TM) and ARCUATE(TM) XP Systems for patients with vertebral compression fractures.
Beyond technology development, Medtronic is also committed to continued support of research and medical education related to the aging spine. The surgeon education course, entitled Management of Osteoporotic Deformity, is the latest in an ongoing series of surgeon forums dedicated to discussion of techniques for optimal care of older adults.
