Healthcare Industry News: endotracheal tube
News Release - October 10, 2006
Smiths Medical Launches Innovative Endotracheal Tube Cuff Pressure ControllerCARLSBAD, Calif., Oct. 10 (HSMN NewsFeed) -- Smiths Medical, part of the global engineering business Smiths Group, announced today the launch of PressureEasyŽ Cuff Pressure Controller for endotracheal tubes.
Until now, traditional methods of measuring endotracheal tube cuff pressure call for use of manometers; which may be expensive, burdensome, and prone to contamination. These devices require periodic monitoring by clinical personnel and need to be calibrated on a regular basis. During the lapse of time between pressure assessments, adverse events -- such as loss of gas volume, tube movement or extubation, tracheal malacia, and Ventilator Associated Pneumonia -- may arise due to over- or under-inflation of the tracheal tube cuff.
The PressureEasyŽ Cuff Pressure Controller is designed to continuously monitor tracheal cuff pressure. Its indicator window signals cuff pressure is maintained between 20-30cm/H2O. In addition, the airway pressure auto-feedback feature boosts cuff pressure to ensure proper sealing when high pressures are used during ventilation.
The only device of its kind, the PressureEasyŽ Cuff Pressure Controller offers several other advantages over traditional methods of cuff pressure control. As a single-patient use device, this cuff pressure controller reduces potential for infection and eliminates sterilization issues with quarantined or isolated patients. The PressureEasyŽ Cuff Pressure Controller does away with managing and inventorying of manometers, issues of availability, calibrating, and replacement of reusable manometers.
"As a global leader in the manufacture of respiratory products, Smiths Medical is proud to devise a safe, cost-effective alternative to manometer use. This novel instrument enhances patient care, and is easier and more convenient to use than the current method," said Jim Cobb, Director of Marketing for Respiratory Products at Smiths Medical. "The development of this technology sets Smiths Medical apart in this ever-growing respiratory medical device market."
