HydroCision(R) to Train Spine Surgeons in Korea to Use New, Minimally Invasive Spinal Procedure, HydroDiscectomy(TM)

Richard E. Nussbaum, M.D., Los Angeles Orthopaedic Institute, will perform a 'live' HydroDiscectomy procedure in Seoul at 'Spine Total Care: New Technologies in Spinal Surgery', Nov. 4-5

BILLERICA, Mass.--(HSMN NewsFeed)--HydroCision Inc. (www.hydrocision.com) announced today that it will sponsor the training of spine surgeons at a Korean venue to perform a new, herniated disc repair procedure called HydroDiscectomy. This minimally invasive spine procedure uses a high-velocity waterjet to quickly and safely decompress herniated (bulging) discs, providing relief to patients suffering from back and/or leg pain. The HydroDiscectomy training will be performed in a "live" procedure by Richard E. Nussbaum, M.D., of the Los Angeles Orthopaedic Institute, on Nov. 4, 2006, during the 17th annual 'Spine Total Care: New Technologies in Spinal Surgery' meeting in Seoul. Dr. Nussbaum will be assisted by Chan-Shik Shim, M.D., Ph.D., Vice President of Academic Affairs at Wooridul Spine Hospital and Director of 'Spine Total Care.'

"HydroDiscectomy is a fast, safe, and effective way to perform a microdiscectomy procedure with minimal nerve retraction and a tiny annulotomy, or opening, in a disc," said Dr. Nussbaum. "The small size of the annulotomy has the potential to reduce recurrence of the herniation, and the minimal nerve retraction can potentially reduce recurrent radiculopthy, or leg pain, that can often occur several months after the procedure is performed."

More than 60 million people worldwide experience chronic lower back pain. Oftentimes, this pain is caused by a herniated or 'bulging' spinal disc, and fixing this problem has often meant having to 'go under the knife' and then take a lot of time off from work to recover from back surgery----which often does not solve the original problem. Now, the FDA-cleared SpineJet MicroResector® from HydroCision can be used in a new, minimally invasive procedure ---- HydroDiscectomy(TM) (high-dro-disk-ECK-toe-me) -- that allows patients to go home just hours afterwards.

"With HydroDiscectomy, my patients walk out of the hospital the same day feeling significantly reduced, or even no, pain at all," said Dr. Nussbaum, who is one of the first spine surgeon in the Los Angeles area to offer HydroDiscectomy. "Chronic back pain is as serious a health issue in Korea as it is in the United States," added Dr. Nussbaum, an active member of the North American Spine Society (NASS) and an independent medical examiner for the state of California's Division of Industrial Accidents. "Approximately 80 percent of people worldwide experience back and/or leg pain at some point in their lives, and as many as 20 percent of working-age adults cope with back and/or leg pain annually."

"HydroDiscectomy allows me to perform a microdiscectomy through a less invasive, small opening in a disc, with no retraction of the nerves, and in a very controlled way. I believe that this will lead to quicker patient recovery and better outcomes with a minimal chance of the same disc herniation occurring again. For these reasons, HydroDiscectomy represents an important breakthrough in minimally invasive spine surgery, and I am therefore looking forward to sharing the benefits of this breakthrough procedure with my Korean colleagues," added Dr. Nussbaum.
