TomoTherapy Incorporated Celebrates Important Milestone with Stratton VA Medical Center

Stratton VA Medical Center is first U.S. Veterans facility to offer image-guided TomoTherapy(R) radiation treatment technology

MADISON, Wis.--(HSMN NewsFeed)--TomoTherapy Inc. announced today that the 100th Hi-Art System® produced by the company is now treating patients at Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany, New York. Stratton VA is the first government facility to offer TomoTherapy radiation treatments, which integrate everyday imaging and 360 degree delivery, to U.S. veterans. This medical center serves veterans within a 100-mile radius of Albany, including 22 counties in upstate New York.

Dr. Ralf Kiehl, Radiation Oncologist at Stratton VA Medical Center, said, "Our nation's heroes deserve state-of-the-art cancer care. Having a true image-guided system affords the patient the best possible precision to target cancer cells while sparing normal tissue. The technology is amazing and may result in not only more precisely targeted doses, but may ultimately lessen overall treatment time."

The Hi-Art System has the ability to treat cases from head to toe. Dr. Kiehl said they plan to treat veterans with prostate, head and neck, lung and brain tumors, among others. Not only will veterans benefit from improved treatments, but the center will be able to assist more patients. "The average time for delivery of a conventional linear accelerator treatment ranges from 15-30 minutes," said Dr. Kiehl. "The TomoTherapy Hi-Art System requires minimal targeting (MVCT) time and the entire process typically takes 5 to 10 minutes less than conventional treatment. This assists the VA in further increasing access to care and reducing wait times as compared with conventional equipment."

"Not only is this an important milestone for TomoTherapy Inc., it's also a significant step for veteran facilities nationwide," noted Dr. Fred Robertson, TomoTherapy Inc. CEO. "The addition of TomoTherapy treatments will provide enhanced options and outcomes to the men and women who serve the United States."
