Accuray and Siemens Announce Collaboration to Jointly Develop Enhanced Radiosurgery and Radiotherapy Products

SUNNYVALE, Calif. and CONCORD, Calif., Nov. 6 (HSMN NewsFeed) -- Accuray Incorporated and Siemens Medical Solutions today announced the signing of an agreement to collaborate in the development of advanced imaging and software solutions targeted for use in both radiosurgery and radiotherapy. The two companies will jointly focus on the integration and optimization of Siemens computed tomography (CT) imaging technology with Accuray's CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System. They will also work towards the integration of Accuray's advanced targeting techniques into Siemens radiotherapy product line.

"This collaboration with Siemens Medical Solutions will enable Accuray to offer additional radiosurgery solutions to healthcare providers worldwide. Accuray's market leading technology and expertise in robotic radiosurgery treatment delivery is an excellent fit with Siemens highly-regarded imaging technology," said Euan S. Thomson, Ph.D., president and chief executive officer of Accuray. "Together, Siemens and Accuray will better serve the needs of patients by providing improved care options to medical facilities."

This collaboration is a natural extension of Accuray's established leadership in robotic radiosurgery and Siemens leading position in medical imaging and radiotherapy.

"We are excited about this relationship with Accuray -- extending our commitment to offer innovative and advanced radiation treatment solutions," said Holger Schmidt, president of Siemens Medical Solutions' Oncology Care Systems division. "Through our agreement with Accuray, we will be able to provide improved care choices to physicians and patients by uniting our capabilities in a mutually beneficial relationship."

Accuray, a global leader in the field of robotic radiosurgery, develops and markets the CyberKnifeŽ Robotic Radiosurgery System, the world's first and only radiosurgery system that utilizes intelligent robotics to treat tumors anywhere in the body with sub-millimeter accuracy. The CyberKnife System treats patients in single or staged (typically 2-5) sessions by delivering multiple beams of precisely directed radiation that converge upon the tumor while minimizing injury to surrounding healthy tissue. Image guidance and computer controlled robotics combine to continuously track, detect and correct for tumor and patient movement throughout the treatment. Because of this precision and accuracy, no head or body frame is required.

Siemens Oncology Care Systems group is a leader in the development of hardware and software for oncology care. Siemens' portfolio of Adaptive Radiation Therapy (ART) solutions includes the PRIMATOM(TM) System, which combines a Siemens linear accelerator with a SOMATOMŽ CT scanner with sliding gantry, providing the ability to visualize treatment structures prior to treatment in order to assure correct patient positioning. Siemens' CT-sliding gantry solution is recognized as the gold standard in in-room treatment imaging.

This advanced imaging technology and workflow optimization solution can be viewed in the Accuray exhibit at the 48th Annual American Society of Therapeutic Radiology (ASTRO) meeting, held November 5-8, 2006, in Philadelphia, Penn.
