Medivance's Arctic Sun(R) Temperature Management System Receives Marketing Approval in JapanAward-Winning Patient Cooling Device to be Distributed by IMI Co. Ltd.
LOUISVILLE, Colo., Dec. 5 (HSMN NewsFeed) -- Medivance, Inc., the leader in the emerging field of non-invasive therapeutic temperature management, today announced it has received approval from the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) to market its novel Arctic SunŽ Temperature Management System in Japan.
The Arctic Sun is a precise non-invasive patient cooling system that quickly and easily controls, monitors, and maintains core body temperature at therapeutic levels. A growing body of research demonstrates that inducing mild hypothermia, or reducing high fevers, potentially has a protective effect that decreases brain damage caused by cardiac arrest, stroke, brain injury, trauma, and other critical illnesses.
IMI Co. Ltd. is Medivance's exclusive distributor in Japan. The Arctic Sun has undergone clinical trials at Nihon University School of Medicine and Kokura Memorial Hospital.
"We are pleased to bring this award-winning technology to hospital critical care and emergency departments in Japan," said Kazumasa Tsumuga, IMI's President. "We believe this technology has great potential to improve outcomes for critically ill patients."
The Arctic Sun received the 2006 Product Differentiation Innovation Award from global growth consulting firm Frost & Sullivan. The patient cooling technology was also recognized as a medical breakthrough by the Wall Street Journal's Technology Innovation Awards.
"Demand for the Arctic Sun continues to grow worldwide as more leading hospitals adopt the non-invasive Arctic Sun as the standard of care for temperature management," said Medivance CEO Robert Kline."
The Arctic Sun system's safe, easy-to-use design allows nursing staff to initiate hypothermia therapy soon after a patient is presented for care, saving precious time. The sophisticated system can accurately and rapidly control a patient's temperature in the range of 33 to 37 degrees Celsius (91.4 to 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit). This precise control and the system's efficiency enable quick and easy induction of mild hypothermia or fever reduction.
