Healthcare Industry News: Access Catheter
News Release - December 12, 2006
Onset Medical Promotes Joe Bishop to President and Chief Executive OfficerIRVINE, Calif.--(HSMN NewsFeed)--Onset Medical Corporation announced today the promotion of Joseph Bishop to President and Chief Executive Officer.
Mr. Bishop, who joined Onset in 2004, has more than 20 years of experience in the medical device industry including management positions at Guidant Corporation and CardioVascular Dynamics, and executive positions at Radiance Medical Systems and Endologix, Inc ("ELGX"). Most currently, Mr. Bishop served as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Onset.
Commenting on this promotion, Onset Chairman Michael R. Henson, said, "Joe has made significant contributions to the development of our technology and growth of the company. Transferring our Pathway Access Technology to new clinical applications and developing the unique manufacturing and operations infrastructure required will be vital to our continued success. Joe has demonstrated the expertise to successfully meet these challenges."
The Pathway Controlled Deployment Technology Platform
The Pathway's Controlled Deployment Technology ("CDT") is a new and different approach to procedures requiring minimally invasive access to remote sites within the body. The Pathway enters the body at a diameter approximately 50% of the size of conventional access devices. Once placed in the body, the Pathway device is expanded in a slow and gentle manner, using radial force to create an internal diameter larger than conventional devices. Thus far, studies have shown that the Controlled Deployment Technology can allow the physician to achieve site access quicker, easier and with less trauma to the body than with conventional access approaches. Onset is developing CDT for a variety of clinical applications in large surgical and interventional markets. These markets include endurology, minimally invasive orthopedic and spinal procedures, gynecology, gastroenterology, endovascular and neurosurgery.
One of Onset's unique applications for urology is the Pathway(TM) Ureteral Access Catheter which provides the urologist with a "super highway" to the kidney through the urethra, bladder and ureter so that instruments and other devices, such as endoscopes and laser fibers, may be repeatedly maneuvered to break up kidney stones. Conventional ureteral access sheaths rely on inserting a large sheath through the use of shear force, which can be difficult and create the potential for ureteral injury.
In 2005, Mr. Bishop successfully negotiated a distribution agreement providing for the distribution of Onset's Controlled Deployment Technology for urology, endourology and gyne-urological application by a large, multi-national medical device company. Onset continues to develop CDT for urology and endourology applications and is in the final stages of development of CDT-based products for cardiology and endovascular applications.
Onset holds three published patents, two of which are licensed, and numerous patents surrounding the CDT are pending.
Onset Medical Corporation is a private medical technology firm located in Irvine, California. Onset is developing the Company's Controlled Deployment Technology to provide clinically superior, minimally invasive and percutaneous access for a wide range of medical procedures.
