Dr. Richard E. Nussbaum Becomes the First Los Angeles-Area Spine Surgeon to Perform a New Minimally Invasive Procedure Called HydroDiscectomy(TM) in an Outpatient Surgery Setting to Treat Pain Caused by a Herniated Disc

"I never dreamed that I would feel this good so soon." Christine Fraire, HydroDiscectomy Patient, 58

BILLERICA, Mass.--(HSMN NewsFeed)--HydroCision Inc. (www.hydrocision.com) announced today that Richard E. Nussbaum, M.D., of the Los Angeles Orthopedic Institute, is the first Los Angeles-area spine surgeon to perform a new, microdiscectomy procedure in an outpatient setting called HydroDiscectomy. This minimally invasive spine procedure uses a high-velocity waterjet to quickly and safely decompress herniated discs, providing immediate relief to patients suffering from back and/or leg pain.

Treating the back pain caused by a herniated spinal disc using traditional back surgery has often meant having to take a lot of time off from work to recover. Now, the FDA-cleared SpineJet MicroResector® from HydroCision can be used in a new, minimally invasive procedure----HydroDiscectomy(TM) (high-dro-disk-ECK-toe-me)--that allows patients to go home just hours after the outpatient procedure.

"HydroDiscectomy is a clinically proven, fast, safe, and effective way to perform a microdiscectomy procedure with minimal nerve retraction and a tiny annulotomy, or opening, in a spinal disc. With HydroDiscectomy, my patients walk out of the hospital the same day feeling significantly reduced, or even no, pain at all," said Dr. Nussbaum, an active member of the North American Spine Society (NASS) and an independent medical examiner for the state of California's Division of Industrial Accidents. "Compared to 'open' spine surgery, HydroDiscectomy leads to quicker patient recovery and better outcomes with a minimal chance of the same disc herniation occurring again. For these reasons, HydroDiscectomy represents an important breakthrough in minimally invasive spine surgery, and I am therefore looking forward to sharing the benefits of this breakthrough procedure with my colleagues," concluded Dr. Nussbaum, who recently presented his initial clinical experience using HydroDiscectomy to an international group of spine surgeons at the 17th Spine Total Care conference in Seoul, Korea.

Christine Fraire, 58, is one of the first Los Angeles-area patients to have the HydroDiscectomy procedure performed by Dr. Nussbaum (October 16, 2006). "I suffered for two and one-half years," says Christine. "It got to the point where I couldn't stand or walk for any length of time. The pain was very bad." But with her daughter's wedding fast approaching (December 2006), Christine decided to schedule a HydroDiscectomy procedure with Dr. Nussbaum. "I never dreamed that I would feel this good so soon," insists Christine. "From the time of my release from outpatient surgery, I have been completely pain-free. I hope more people who are suffering from back and/or leg pain will hear about HydroDiscectomy so that they also can find relief from chronic and excruciating pain."
