K2M Completes 500th Surgery with MESA(TM) Spinal SystemSurgeries Show Early Sign of Success for New Stabilization Product
LEESBURG, Va.--(HSMN NewsFeed)--K2M, Inc., relying on a Surgeon Driven Design(TM) philosophy for innovative product development, today announced the completion of the 500th surgery using its new MESA(TM) Spinal System. The system, which was presented to the public at the 2006 North American Spine Society (NASS) conference in Seattle, WA in September, is a revolutionary advance in stabilization technology used in the treatment of spinal disorders.
MESA was first utilized in degenerative lumbar surgeries, but quickly evolved for use in more complex deformity surgeries to address the market need for advanced spinal technology. More than 100 surgeons have used the system to perform the 500 surgeries across the nation. According to Dr. Jean-Jacques Abitbol, Past President of NASS, "When you first see MESA in action, the importance of what K2M was able to accomplish really hits you. They found a way to not only eliminate all profile above the rod, but were also able to eliminate torque applied to the spine during locking. MESA truly represents a revolution in pedicle screw fixation and I would, without a doubt, recommend this system to fellow surgeons."
"MESA is quick, low profile, and gives precision control when compressing," stated Dr. Cameron Carmody of Baylor Regional Medical Center. The excitement over the system was also echoed by Dr. Raymund Woo of the University of Florida Health Science Center, who stated, "MESA bridges the gap between existing small stature and conventional adult deformity instrumentation, and provides a welcome implant option in the correction of severe spinal deformities in children."
"MESA has clinically surpassed our expectations and the excitement only continues to grow," stated Eric Major, K2M's President and CEO. "K2M takes great satisfaction in being able to help make a difference in the lives of patients who suffer from spinal disorders. We are thrilled with MESA and look forward to its continued success in the future."
