ReGen Biologics Data Presented in San Diego
FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J.--(HSMN NewsFeed)--Data derived from ReGen Biologics' pivotal meniscus implant trial was presented last week during the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) meeting.The podium presentation, "New Tissue Generated by the Collagen Meniscus Implant (CMI) Leads to Increased Activity Levels After Two Years," was given during Specialty Day, a day set aside for programs produced by the Board of Specialty Societies. It was part of an AOSSM (American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine) scientific session focused on the meniscus.
The panel was moderated by Kurt Spindler, M.D. of Nashville and co-moderated by Benjamin Shaffer, M.D. of Washington, D.C. The CMI data, authored by William Rodkey, DVM and Karen Briggs, MPh, showed a significant correlation between change (increase) in Tegner activity levels over 2 years and percent total meniscus tissue in patients who receive the CMI implant and have greater than 50% total meniscus tissue.
The study confirms the importance of preserving as much meniscus tissue as possible at the time of meniscus treatment, and supports the potential positive benefits of using the CMI as a scaffold to allow the patient's own tissue to fill the void left by partial meniscectomy.
