Tornier and Bioretec Announce Partnership in Bioresorbable Orthopedic Products

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. & TAMPERE, Finland--(HSMN NewsFeed)--Tornier, a global leader in extremities orthopedics, announced today that it has entered into a partnership with Bioretec Ltd, a Finnish biomaterials company. The partnership establishes Nexa Orthopedics, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Tornier, as the exclusive distributor in the United States for a line of proprietary, bioresorbable surgical devices to be manufactured by Bioretec.

The new product line to be marketed by Nexa will include pin and screw Fixation Systems for use by extremity physicians to repair and treat a wide range of bone and joint disorders including fractures and arthritis. Recently cleared by the US FDA, the Bioretec ActivaPin(TM) and ActivaScrew(TM) Fixation Systems feature the company's proprietary and patent-pending Self-Locking SL(TM) and Auto-Compression(TM) biomaterials technology. Nexa will market these products under its NexFix(TM) Resorbable Fixation System brand.

Doug Kohrs, President and Chief Executive Officer of Tornier commented "We are impressed with Bioretec's experience in resorbable biomaterials technology and longstanding commitment to innovation. The addition of these proprietary products to the already broad Nexa product line reinforces Tornier's commitment to serving extremity and podiatric surgeons and their patients."

"We are very pleased to have Tornier and Nexa recognize the potential for the Bioretec biomaterials technology to improve both surgical procedure and patient outcomes. Their combined market presence represents a strong platform from which to launch our products in the United States," said Risto Penttila, Chief Executive Officer of Bioretec.

Nexa personnel will be available this week at the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons' Annual Scientific Conference in Orlando, Florida to demonstrate products in the new NexFix(TM) Resorbable Fixation System line.
