Access Scientific Debuts 'The Wand,' Innovative Micro-Access Safety Introducer

NEW YORK--(HSMN NewsFeed)--The Wand(TM) All-in-One Micro-Access Safety Introducer received a strongly positive reception from clinicians at the recent annual meeting of the Society for Interventional Radiology (SIR).

The Wand is a unique, proprietary introducer that may provide faster and easier micro-access for all types of vascular access.

Developed by Access Scientific, Inc., the device could replace the Seldinger Technique. The older Seldinger approach requires up to 12 steps and involves the use of several loose parts, while The Wand offers a simpler four-step procedure involving a single component.

Dr. Constantin Cope, a noted pioneer in micro-access, has described The Wand as "a promising bloodless development of the micro-access technique."

The device has potential advantages for both patients and clinicians in several applications. These may include:

  • Replacement of an entire micro-access kit with one integrated device;
  • Rapid insertion of central venous catheters (CVCs) and peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs);
  • Diagnostic and interventional cardiology procedures;
  • Dialysis procedures and access to problem fistulae and grafts.

The device was conceived by Michael Tal, M.D., Director of Research in Interventional Radiology at Yale University School of Medicine. Access Scientific is a medical device company funded by Carrot Capital Healthcare Ventures, a seed- and early-stage venture capital fund.

Access Scientific is preparing to seek FDA 510(k) market clearance for The Wand. The device is protected by patents and patents pending, domestic and international. The 32nd Annual Meeting of the Society for Interventional Radiology was held in Seattle, March 2-5.
