K2M, Inc. Redefines Spine Surgery with the SERENGETI(TM) Minimally Invasive Retractor SystemScrew-Based Minimally Invasive System Receives Great Praise from World Renowned Surgeons
LEESBURG, Va.--(HSMN NewsFeed)--K2M, Inc., relying on a Surgeon Driven Design(TM) philosophy for innovative product development, today announced successful clinical evaluations using its new SERENGETI(TM) Minimally Invasive Retractor System. The system offers a novel approach for screw and rod placement resulting in improved visualization and access for posterior spine procedures.
SERENGETI features a patent pending screw-based design allowing for percutaneous delivery with the pedicle screw and establishes a fixed position to the anatomy. This unique placement eliminates retractor re-positioning typically associated with competitive systems, thereby potentially reducing surgical procedure time. Additionally, the SERENGETI retractor facilitates a procedure that can preserve the muscle and neurovasculature, which may lead to reduced post-operative pain and shorter recovery time for the patient.
Other standout features include the system's capability for use in multiple level constructs and its minimal instrumentation which reduces surgeon learning curve and operating room set up time.
SERENGETI was first introduced at the 2006 North American Spine Society (NASS) conference in Seattle, WA. According to Dr. Richard Guyer, the current President of NASS, "The SERENGETI system is so unbelievably simple. I've used other competitive products and the retractor K2M has developed is clearly the easiest to use." Additionally, Dr. Guyer stated, "I was particularly impressed with the direct visualization of the screws and the reduction of radiation exposure. Dr. Pierce Nunley of Christus Schumpert Hospital and Willis Knighton Hospital echoed Dr. Guyer's sentiments and stated, "This system allows the surgeon to see the heads of the screws and use their inherent eye-hand coordination to place the rods rather than fancy jigs or X-ray radiation from fluoroscopy." Dr. Nunley also noted, "Compared to other systems, this requires much less set up and significantly fewer steps to place the screws and rods. And it allows for placing multiple screws percutaneously, which is not possible with other systems."
