HydroCision to Launch MicroResector MD(TM) at this Week's American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) Annual Meeting

Recent study showed 'cutting-with-water' HydroDiscectomy spine procedure to treat lumbar herniated disc required zero revision surgeries compared to conventional microdiscectomy spine surgery, 17.6% of which required reoperations(1)

BILLERICA, Mass.--(HSMN NewsFeed)--HydroCision® Inc. (www.hydrocision.com) announced today that it will launch a new product, MicroResector MD, at the 2007 annual meeting of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), which convenes this week in Washington, D.C. The MicroResector MD is based on HydroCision's HydroDiscectomy(TM) platform.

HydroDiscectomy uses a high-velocity waterjet to quickly and safely decompress herniated discs, providing relief to patients suffering from chronic back and/or leg pain. The HydroDiscectomy procedure bridges the gap between conservative therapy and conventional open surgery. HydroDiscectomy can offer an option to patients who have failed conservative treatments. In a recent retrospective study of the outcomes of 27 patients who underwent a HydroDiscectomy procedure to treat their lumbar herniated disc, these patients required zero revision procedures within the first year after surgery, compared to 34 patients who underwent a microdiscectomy spine surgery using conventional techniques to treat a lumbar herniation, 17.6 percent of whom required a revision microdiscectomy within a year after surgery.

"While a great majority of conventional lumbar microdiscectomies realize good or excellent patient outcomes in the immediate post-op period, unfortunately longer follow-up of these patients reveals much less optimistic results," said Douglas J. Daniels, President and CEO of HydroCision. "The scientific literature reports up to a 26 percent recurrence of herniation after microdiscectomies are performed, and up to a 33 percent recurrence of pain, numbness, tingling and weakness in the legs post-operatively that is likely caused by the epidural scarring that results from a conventional lumbar microdiscectomy. The smaller annulotomy created in a HydroDiscectomy and the decreased nerve root manipulation in this procedure with our MicroResector MD product prevent these negative outcomes," added Daniels. "We can make a very strong case in favor of HydroDiscectomy using the MicroResector MD over conventional microdiscectomy as the procedure of choice to treat lumbar disc herniation."
