NeuroLogica's CereTom(R) Provides First Ever On Site Post-Fight Brain CT During De La Hoya-Mayweather Weekend
Brain Bleed Discovered in One of Eight Boxers Scanned - Flexibility of CereTom, Ease of Scan On-Site Facilitated Immediate Medical TreatmentDANVERS, Mass.--(HSMN NewsFeed)--NeuroLogica Corporation, a neuroscience-based medical imaging company, today announced that their portable CereTom CT scanner, was utilized to scan eight boxers during the weekend of the Oscar De La Hoya - Floyd Mayweather fight on May 5. This marks the first time in the sport's rich history where ringside doctors and medical staff were able to conduct brain CT imaging just steps away from the ring. Due to the availability of the CereTom, one scan possibly saved a boxer's life.
Lorenzo Bethea was found to have a brain bleed resulting from his fight, and was immediately rushed to the emergency room for treatment. The prescribed post-fight CT scan of Bethea showed that he had suffered a subdural hematoma, or a brain-bleed and a midline shift. If not for the CereTom, Bethea likely would have not been sent to the hospital, and could have been left in a life-threatening state. He was released from the hospital after 48 hours of observation, but is suspended indefinitely from fighting in Nevada for obvious health risks.
"The scan of Lorenzo Bethea shows how important post-fight scans are for these athletes," said Keith Kizer, Executive Director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission. "Boxing, and even other unarmed combat sports, can greatly benefit from these extra safety precautions and life-saving diagnostic technology. NeuroLogica's desire to volunteer its medical equipment and services for the weekend was a tremendous benefit for all of us, especially the fighters for whom we are responsible."
NeuroLogica teamed with the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC), the sanctioning body for unarmed combat sports events, and volunteered the use of the CereTom for the fights. NeuroLogica also provided the Commission with a certified radiologist to read the images as well as an RT clinical coordinator to administer the scans.
"When we scanned Bethea, he did not present with any visible contusions and from looking and talking with him, no one would have necessarily thought he had a brain bleed," said Dr. Ronald Sauer, the on-site radiologist who read Bethea's scan. "Before his scan was complete, we were able to see the bleeding, and we began compiling the images for his doctors, so upon his arrival at the emergency room, he had already been diagnosed and was ready for treatment. The portability and flexibility of the CereTom, as well as the dedication of the ringside physicians to provide the best standard of care for each fighter allowed us to catch an injury that very well could have been life threatening if he was not scanned immediately after this fight."
The CereTom is optimal for use in sporting events; its portability, lightweight and wireless image transfer, allows for immediate access to a full neurological scan in 30 seconds. This is critical, especially in the event of brain injury, as the images can be transmitted to the facility where the athlete is transported to. This reduces the door-to-scan time; allowing for the treatment path to be identified in advance.
The CereTom(TM) is 29 inches long, about five feet tall and four feet wide and weighs approximately 750 pounds, and is designed for use in the ER, OR, ICU, MICU, SICU, NICU, interventional suite or any medical clinic. The system's battery can be recharged in any standard wall outlet and holds enough power to image four to eight patients.
