In a study led by P. Squara, MD from the Clinique Ambroise Pare, Paris, France, cardiac output measurements obtained from NICOM were compared with thermodilution measurements in the Intensive care unit immediately after cardiac surgery. Measurements were simultaneously recorded and compared in 110 patients. Parameters evaluated included accuracy, precision, responsiveness, and reliability of NICOM for detecting changes in cardiac output.
Lead author P. Squara concluded, "Cardiac output measured by NICOM had most often acceptable accuracy, precision, and responsiveness in a wide range of circulatory situations."
Dr. Squara continued, "In an Intensive Care setting, accurate cardiac monitoring is essential for establishing a differential diagnosis. Existing techniques which require vascular access through the large veins or arteries are associated with complications, take valuable time to administer and increase cost of care. The ability to use a non-invasive device to attain accurate measurements is a significant advance in intensive care medicine. "
