TomoTherapy to Introduce StatRT(TM) at AAPM
New Software Facilitates Optimal Treatment of Time-Critical Cancer CasesMADISON, Wis.--(HSMN NewsFeed)--TomoTherapy Incorporated (NASDAQ: TTPY ) today announced that it will introduce StaTRT(TM) at the annual American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) meeting in Minneapolis, July 22-26, 2007. StaTRT is a new software package for the TomoTherapy® Hi-Art® treatment system. It allows the full radiation therapy process--CT scanning, treatment planning and treatment delivery--to be completed in as little as 30 minutes. The software is designed to enhance the quality of care for time-critical cancer cases.
"True integration of CT-guided, intensity-modulated radiation therapy has been at the core of our development efforts since day one," said Fred Robertson, M.D., CEO for TomoTherapy. "StaTRT lets clinicians apply the fruits of this focus for the efficient, effective care of patients who need it most."
With StaTRT, Hi-Art users can rapidly initiate a fractionated image-guided, intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IG/IMRT) treatment plan, or easily provide emergency palliation. The entire process is easily managed from a single computer, the Hi-Art treatment system's Operator Station.
The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre in Ontario, Canada, which will soon install its second TomoTherapy unit, served as a pilot site for StaTRT software.
One of the Centre's Senior Medical Physicists, Miller MacPherson, Ph.D., noted, "We have found that the dose distributions from StaTRT are much more conformal than our traditional palliative techniques. This allows for better tissue sparing and, we hope, better tolerance of the treatment."
Dr. MacPherson added, "Beyond dose distributions, being able to image, plan and treat these patients in a single appointment offers a much more convenient and comfortable experience."
