Calypso(R) Medical Announces Intent to Interface with Treatment Solutions from Varian Medical Systems

SEATTLE--(HSMN NewsFeed)--Calypso® Medical today is announcing its intent to interface the company's Calypso® 4D Localization System to Varian's treatment planning system and linear accelerators to support precise radiotherapy treatments for cancer patients. The Calypso System will be interfaced with Varian's Eclipse® in the initial product launch. Future products will be developed with 4D Integrated Treatment® console to give clinicians additional capabilities for patient positioning, motion management and tumor targeting.

"The relationship between Calypso Medical and Varian products will enable radiation oncology centers to benefit from innovative tumor positioning and monitoring technologies from both companies. This will help to ensure that clinical solutions can be smoothly implemented into clinical practice," said Eric R. Meier, Calypso Medical chief executive officer and president.

Calypso Medical intends to collaborate with Varian Medical Systems on patient positioning, motion management, and tumor targeting solutions throughout treatment delivery.

"Varian's commitment to relationships such as this one between Varian and Calypso supports unique operational advantages for the radiation therapy clinicians," said Karla Knott, senior director of marketing for Varian's Oncology Systems business. "Ultimately, this will result in a smooth workflow when using Varian's On Board Imager® device and Calypso 4D Localization System for accurate patient positioning and continuous, real-time target monitoring."

The Calypso® 4D Localization System and implanted Beacon® electromagnetic transponders are designed to provide an objective and continuous method to setup and continuously monitor the patient during radiation delivery. Working together with a leading radiation therapy provider provides continued proof of Calypso Medical's commitment to improving cancer patient care. As highly-conformal radiation therapy treatment demands knowing the exact location of the target moment to moment, the Calypso® System can work in tandem with Varian's On Board Imager® and other product platforms to ensure that pinpoint accuracy is continuously maintained throughout the treatment process.

About Calypso® Medical

Calypso Medical Technologies, Inc. ("Calypso") is a Seattle-based, privately held medical device company. The company's proprietary tumor localization system utilizes miniaturized implanted devices (Beacon® electromagnetic transponders) to continuously, accurately and objectively pinpoint the location of tumors for improved accuracy in radiation therapy. Calypso addresses two major issues in modern radiation oncology: errors in treatment set-up and tumor motion during treatment. In addition, the Calypso® 4D Localization System's non-ionizing electromagnetic guidance has the potential to improve work flow efficiency and treatment-room utilization. The technology is designed for body-wide cancers commonly treated with radiation therapy, including prostate, breast, lung, head, neck and other radiation therapy target organs. FDA 510(k) clearance for use in the prostate only was received July 2006. For more information visit http://www.calypsomedical.com.
