TomoTherapy Co-Founder to Receive Health Breakthrough Award from Ladies' Home Journal
MADISON, Wis.--(HSMN NewsFeed)--TomoTherapy Incorporated (NASDAQ: TTPY ) announced today that T. Rock Mackie, PhD, and Minesh Mehta, MD, will be honored with a Health Breakthrough Award from Ladies' Home Journal (LHJ). The award recognizes their groundbreaking work in the field of radiation therapy for cancer care.Dr. Mackie, co-founder of TomoTherapy and Dr. Mehta, the lead radiation oncologist in the first clinic to use helical TomoTherapy(SM) treatments will be honored at the Health Breakthrough Awards Luncheon in New York City on August 7th, hosted by LHJ Editor-in-Chief Diane Salvatore. The second-annual Health Breakthrough Awards recognize medical professionals who have transformed their area of health with results that dramatically benefit women and families.
Drs. Mackie and Mehta will be featured, along with other doctors and researchers, in the September issue of the magazine, on sale August 14th.
Dr. Mackie, co-founder of TomoTherapy and a University of Wisconsin professor of Medical Physics and Human Oncology at the medical school, is being honored for his work with the TomoTherapy® Hi-Art® treatment system, which he developed with Paul Reckwerdt, also co-founder of TomoTherapy. Dr. Mehta was the Chairman of Human Oncology at the UW and was instrumental in the clinical assessment of the Hi-Art treatment system. He continues his clinical and research work with the system today.
The Hi-Art treatment system is an innovative radiation therapy system that utilizes a CT scan to help position the patient, then delivers its radiation beam helically while using a special collimator that varies the beam intensity during delivery. The net result is that the radiation is precisely delivered to the tumor area, helping to minimize damage to healthy tissue and spare patients of some common side effects.
"This award validates years of work by the entire TomoTherapy research and development team, I am only the placeholder for the honor," said Dr. Mackie. "It's ultimately the patients who benefit from improved technology and we strive to continually raise the bar for innovative and better treatment options within the radiotherapy community."
The Ladies' Home Journal team, including Health Director Julia Kagan and Medical Advisor Dr. Marianne J. Legato, founder of the field of gender-specific medicine, combed the country for Health Breakthrough Award nominees by reaching out to medical schools and organizations, teaching hospitals, foundations and government agencies and poring through newspapers and medical journals. Drs. Mackie and Mehta were chosen out of a candidate list of nearly 100 accomplished professionals.
"These medical professionals are among the most dynamic thinkers in the country, and their innovations directly save lives and improve care for millions of American families," says Salvatore. "I am thrilled to be able to showcase them in this compelling, must-read report, and to celebrate them at our lunch."
