Elekta Brings Intelligent Ways to Manage Motion During Cancer Treatment to ESTRO
BARCELONA, Spain, Sept. 11 (HSMN NewsFeed) -- Elekta is showcasing its motion management systems at this year's European Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncologists (ESTRO), held September 8-13, 2007, at the Palau de Congresos de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain. Elekta will highlight innovative solutions for motion management and patient positioning at the Elekta booth No. 4-6."Holding still for 10 minutes? Bet you cannot!"
Elekta is a leading global supplier of advanced radiation oncology and interventional image guidance products for accurate patient positioning in radiation therapy. Carla Leuginer, Marketing Communications Manager at Medical Intelligence, an Elekta company, explains that patient stillness during radiation treatment allows for more conformal treatment due to more precise targeting of the tumor. For this reason, motion management systems play a significant role in successful treatment, enabling clinicians to comfortably immobilize patients during radiation therapy. Leuginer says, "Visitors to the Elekta booth will be challenged to lie still for 10 minutes, and many will be unable to do so without the use of immobilization products such as those available from Elekta."

The HexaPOD(TM) evo RT system, a new display at the Elekta booth, is a robotic 6D patient-positioning platform that takes the prior HexaPOD(TM) CouchTop system to the next level. HexaPOD evo offers improved patient access and clearance, and provides sub-millimeter positioning accuracy. The integration with the iGUIDE(TM) cameras and enhanced software improves and simplifies the clinical workflow, providing true six degrees of freedom to easily align the tumor to the isocenter. The iBEAM® evo Couchtop is made of carbon fiber to reduce imaging artifacts. When combined with the BodyFIX® or HeadFIX® system, the patient can be comfortably immobilized.
In addition, Elekta will display the DynaTRAC(TM) motion management system, which offers pre-treatment positioning and treatment verification during treatment.
Active Breathing Coordinator(TM) (ABC) for use in radiation therapy will also be featured at the Elekta booth. ABC minimizes abdominal and thoracic inaccuracies that occur during breathing, and is the only assisted breath hold system commercially available.
