Medtronic Introduces Minimally Invasive System for Patients Undergoing Complex Back Surgery

CD Horizon(R) Longitude(TM) Multi-Level Percutaneous Spinal Fixation System Now Available;
Designed to Reduce Muscle Damage and Scarring

MEMPHIS, Tenn.--(HSMN NewsFeed)--Medtronic, Inc. (NYSE:MDT ) announced today the U.S. availability of the CD Horizon® Longitude(TM) Multi-level Percutaneous Fixation System for use in minimally invasive spinal surgeries that require multiple levels of spinal fusion. The system's free-hand inserter and reduction screw extenders are designed to allow a stabilizing rod to be passed through a small incision over numerous levels of vertebrae in the spine.

"The CD Horizon Longitude System is the only percutaneous Fixation System designed to eliminate the traditional practice of muscle stripping and dissection over numerous levels for patients that require complex spinal surgery," said Mark Dekutoski, M.D., associate professor in the Department of Orthopedics at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. "By eliminating the need for a large incision to insert the rods, issues associated with traditional spinal surgery, such as excessive blood loss, extended recovery time, muscle damage and large scarring may potentially be reduced or eliminated."

As part of Medtronic's Minimal Access Spinal Technologies (MAST(TM)) portfolio, the CD Horizon Longitude System compliments the successful CD Horizon® Sextant® II System by allowing surgeons to attach longer rod constructions and better treat patients through small incisions in the thoracic or thoracolumbar region. Each of these truly percutaneous products can help surgeons shorten hospital stays and return patients more quickly to normal, active lives.

"The ability to tackle multiple levels in complex spine trauma and spinal deformity, such as degenerative scoliosis, in a minimally invasive manner is a significant benefit to the patient," said Neel Anand, M.D., director of orthopaedic surgery at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. "This has enabled us to tackle challenging problems, especially in my elderly patients who come into my office and often suffer from moderate degenerative spinal curvature deformity."

Medtronic's CD Horizon Longitude System will be on display at the Congress of Neurological Surgeons in San Diego, Sept. 15-19 at booth # 1319 of the San Diego Convention Center.
