Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland Brings Portable CT Scanning to Pediatric Patients
NeuroLogica's CereTom® Provides CT Scans for Children at one of Northern California's Largest Pediatric Trauma CentersDANVERS, Mass.(HSMN NewsFeed) - September 18, 2007 - Children in the Bay Area no longer have to be taken out of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) or the operating room to get a CT scan. This month, Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland will be the first pediatric hospital in the region to use the CereTom® CT scanner. This state-of-the-art technology, developed by NeuroLogica Corporation based in Danvers, Massachusetts, allows hospital technologists to take a CT scan of a child's brain at their bedside. The CereTom® eliminates the time, effort and minimizes the risk of having to transport critical patients from their hospital beds or operating room to a hospital's radiology department.
Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland plans to use the CereTom® CT scanner in its intensive care units and operating rooms for children who have a variety of head or neck conditions. Each year, the hospital treats nearly 300 children with serious head injuries and performs more than 350 neurosurgery procedures that may require an immediate CT scan.
"Children's is committed to the latest technology that benefits clinical care," said Peter Sun, M.D., Medical Director of Neurosurgery at Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland. "The portable CereTom® scanner brings the CT scanner to the patient in the OR during surgery where we can get a clear and immediate image of surgical results. It also brings the scanner to the ICU thereby eliminating the time of transporting critically ill patients to the traditional nonmoblie CT scanner."
The CereTom® CT scanner will be an important new technology tool that Children's Hospital Oakland will integrate with its Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS). PACS will allow the hospital's physicians to view all diagnostic-imaging exams including the CereTom® CT scanner's images on any computer anywhere in the hospital.
Children's Hospital Oakland is the region's only independent children's hospital and one of Northern California's largest designated Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Centers with more than 190,000 inpatient and outpatient visits each year and more than 50,000 emergency room visits. The hospital is a center for excellence in pediatric healthcare, research, child advocacy and medical training.
NeuroLogica predicts smaller hospitals in more remote locations will soon be able to obtain the affordable CereTom® and be able to scan patients on site. Images acquired by the CereTom® can be sent wirelessly to top specialists anywhere there is Internet access, allowing for immediate consultation on extremely critical cases.
"We are proud that our technology has been able to the raise the standard of care for children, allowing them to receive CT scans without leaving the Intensive Care Unit," says Diane Clifford, Director of Global Marketing for NeuroLogica Corp. "The CereTom's incredible level of applicability in multiple medical settings gives doctors at Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland the flexibility needed to provide the best medical imaging available to care for critically ill newborns and children of all ages."
The CereTom® is now installed at hospitals and medical centers across the US and Europe including The Massachusetts General Hospital and UCLA Medical Center.
