News Release - September 25, 2007
First TomoTherapy Patient Treatments Begin at Tata Memorial in IndiaMADISON, Wis.--(HSMN NewsFeed)--TomoTherapy Incorporated (NASDAQ: TTPY ) announced today that cancer patients in India are now being treated with the TomoTherapy® Hi-Art® system at Mumbai's Tata Memorial Centre. The Tata Memorial Centre, Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research & Education in Cancer (ACTREC) is a comprehensive cancer care centre that was established in 1941 and a pioneer in providing state-of-the-art treatment options for patients. The TomoTherapy Hi-Art treatment system provides Tata Memorial Centre with greater accuracy and precision in radiation therapy.
"We are pleased that the TomoTherapy system is now being used in India to treat cancer patients," said Fred Robertson, M.D., CEO of TomoTherapy Inc. Robertson recently returned from Beijing, China, after attending the grand opening for the first center to install a TomoTherapy treatment system in that country. "India and China are two highly populated countries and we are pleased to enhance the quality of cancer treatment for their citizens."
While radiation therapy is widely available in the United States and Western Europe, many developing countries currently do not have a sufficient number of linear accelerators to adequately treat their domestic cancer populations. For example, there are currently approximately 13 linear accelerators per million people in the United States compared to less than one per million people in India or China.
TomoTherapy now has an installed base of over 125 Hi-Art treatment systems in 16 countries worldwide.
