First-in-Man Single Port Pediatric Urological Operations Performed at Cleveland Clinic

Kaouk, director of Robotic Urologic Surgery and Dr. Jeffrey Palmer, director of Minimally Invasive Pediatric Urology at Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute of Cleveland Clinic recently performed the first-in-man pediatric varicelectomy entirely through a single belly button incision using The Uni-X(TM) single port access Laparoscopic System, a single, multi-cannula laparoscopic port and specially designed curved instrumentation.A varicocele is an abnormal dilatation of the scrotal veins which causes a testicular pain and is strongly associated with a male infertility and endocrine dysfunctions. A varicocelectomy is a surgical ligation of the spermatic veins, which is designed to establish a proper testicular circulation and, hence, prevent an associated male infertility and endocrine dysfunctions.
