TomoTherapy Incorporated to Introduce High Performance Couch at ASTRO 2007New Design Improves TomoTherapy(R) Hi-Art(R) Treatment System Usability and Patient Throughput While Maintaining Sub-Millimeter Accuracy and Precision
MADISON, Wis.--(HSMN NewsFeed)--TomoTherapy Incorporated (NASDAQ: TTPY ) today announced that it will launch its new High Performance Couch for the TomoTherapy® Hi·Art® treatment system at the 49th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) in Los Angeles, October 28 - November 1, 2007. The High Performance Couch, which will be on display in TomoTherapy’s ASTRO booth (#1049), incorporates an all-new treatment table design with functionality that improves system performance and clinical workflow efficiency.
Key features of the High Performance Couch include: two side-mounted Couch Control Keypads; motorized lateral motion control; two gantry-mounted Position Control Panels with touch-screen technology; hands-free Patient Unload; and interactive software that monitors real-time 3D position, thereby accommodating image-guided intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), stereotactic radiation therapy (SRT) and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS).
Through rigorous testing, the High Performance Couch has reliably demonstrated sub-millimeter accuracy and precision. In accelerated life testing, the couch has surpassed the equivalent of more than 10 years of wear and tear.
“We are delighted to introduce the High Performance Couch at this year’s ASTRO meeting,” said Fred Robertson, M.D., CEO for TomoTherapy. “With this significant system enhancement, our customers gain further efficiencies in their quality assurance, imaging and treatment processes, all without compromising the accuracy and precision clinicians and patients have come to expect from the TomoTherapy Hi·Art system’s CT-guided, helical IMRT deliveries.”
The High Performance Couch was piloted at three TomoTherapy treatment centers: Appleton Medical Center in Appleton, Wis.; Thomson Cancer Survival Center in Knoxville, Tenn.; and Willis-Knighton Cancer Center in Shreveport, La.
According to Stanley Reed, M.S., a medical physicist for the Appleton Medical Center, “The High Performance Couch is very well designed, with a lot of little things adding up to a big difference. The hands-free Patient Unload feature, for example, allows our therapists to focus entirely on patients as they prepare to leave the treatment room.”
“We are ecstatic about the new couch,” added Chester Ramsey, Ph.D., director of medical physics at the Thomson Cancer Survival Center. “It has substantially decreased set-up time, saving us 1 to 3 minutes per patient. And, we have seen similar time-savings in machine quality assurance.”
Angela Hicks, radiation therapist at Willis-Knighton Cancer Center, said: “We’re saving 2 to 3 minutes per patient because the High Performance Couch moves more quickly and smoothly. Plus, the Couch Control Keypads are easy to use and well placed. We can keep an eye on the patient, the lasers and the Position Control Panel—all at the same time.”
