The Vidacare EZ-IO product system allows intraosseous (IO) access through the bone marrow cavity in patients suffering from an acute injury or illness. As more medical facilities have adopted the EZ-IO, the IO infusion system’s faster, safer process continues to help medical professionals provide patients with life-saving drugs and fluids immediately. The EZ-IO product system is based on technology developed at the University of Texas in San Antonio, and provides a viable alternative to traditional intravenous (IV) access, which is often difficult to obtain in patients whose veins have collapsed as a result of trauma or dehydration. When traditional vascular access is challenging or impossible, the EZ-IO product system enables emergency health professionals to drill inside the bone, providing for the rapid, secure and safe delivery of lifesaving drugs and fluids.
The American Heart Association (AHA) recently revised its guidelines for advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), now recommending IO as the first alternative to IV for cardiac arrest. Previously, the first alternative was endotracheal tube administration of drugs, which many EMS physicians believe is ineffective, according to the AHA.

Of the devices currently on the market, I believe the EZ-IO is the most logical choice because of its ease of use and reliability. I encourage all EMS providers to use the EZ-IO, not as a last resort after failing multiple IV attempts, but instead as first line, particularly in cardiac arrest, multiple trauma, difficult extrication, altered mental status, and other situations where, in the experience of the EMT, IV access has proven to be both difficult and met with low success.”

Additionally, Boston Medical Center, Children’s Hospital of Boston, University Health System San Antonio and Allegheny General Hospital are a few of the many hospitals across the country that have implemented the EZ-IO and intraosseous intervention as a first response.
