Cook Medical's Zenith Endograft Captures Leading Market Share Position in Endovascular Aortic Repair Global Market

Built on Patient-Focused Innovation, Company's Rapidly Growing Business Unit Drives Double-Digit Growth; Forecasts Point to Continued Momentum in 2008 and Beyond

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.--(HSMN NewsFeed)--Cook Medical today announced that its Aortic Intervention strategic business unit has captured more than 40 percent of the world market share, a leading global position in the endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) market. Through the rapid adoption of its advanced Zenith Endovascular Graft System designed to treat abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA), the company has gained momentum as physicians, hospitals and other medical institutions have increasingly chosen Zenith as an effective, minimally invasive means of treating potentially life-threatening AAAs.

Cook’s Aortic Intervention SBU has experienced significant growth throughout the past year. For the year to date, the business unit has increased its global sales by 37 percent. As Cook’s current offerings in aortic intervention continue to gain momentum and new products are introduced to market, this growth pattern is predicted to continue in 2008.

“Our extraordinary growth throughout 2007 demonstrates clearly that the market is clamoring for personalized and customized devices for endovascular aortic repair,” said Barry Thomas, vice president of Cook’s Aortic Intervention SBU. “Continuing its rich history of quality and excellence, Cook designed the Zenith Endograft product family to accurately and effectively address the unique and individual needs of today’s aortic aneurysm patients and the physicians treating them.”

The Cook Zenith Endograft, the largest-selling AAA endograft in the world, has a nine-year history of successful use in Europe and a seven-year history in the US. In 2006, in a move that further expanded Cook’s global reach, the Cook Zenith Endograft was approved as the first device available for EVAR in Japan, one of the world’s largest and most important medical markets. Since its Japanese introduction, the Cook Zenith Endograft has experienced rapid and widespread adoption throughout the Japanese market.

AAA is a disease that occurs when the walls of the aorta, the body’s largest blood vessel, weaken and expand. The larger the aneurysm, the more apt it is to rupture, creating a potentially fatal situation. Each year, nearly 200,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with a life-threatening AAA. Currently the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S., AAAs typically strike men and women between the age of 60 and 70, and the incidence of disease increases dramatically with age. Those who smoke, have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and a family history of heart disease are particularly at risk for the disease.

With increasing support from the medical field, Cook expects to see continued growth and demand for the Zenith Endograft product family. In an effort to expand into the thoracic aortic aneurysm repair market, Cook recently submitted final PMA modules to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for approval of the Cook Zenith TX2® Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm Endovascular Graft. The product is currently available in Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

Furthering its efforts to expand into the thoracic aortic aneurysm market, Cook has received an FDA go-ahead for initiation of a clinical trial with the Cook Zenith Dissection Endovascular System for the treatment of Type B thoracic aortic dissections in the United States. The groundbreaking trial is an important milestone in the development of treatments for thoracic aortic dissections.
