NeoGuide Systems Refocuses Its Business on Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery Market

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(HSMN NewsFeed)--NeoGuide Systems Inc., a developer of robotic endoscopic technology, has announced that it has refocused its business on the rapidly emerging area of natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES). NOTES is a breakthrough surgical technique that allows procedures to be conducted using the body’s natural orifices – such as the mouth, anus and vagina – as entry points, minimizing the pain, scarring, recovery time and complications found with open and laparoscopic procedures.

NOTES is already being performed worldwide in procedures such as tubal ligations and gallbladder removal. Growing physician support of the new method has led to a call for new technologies designed to ensure its safety, efficacy and advancement.

“We see a tremendous opportunity in NOTES, both in terms of physician and patient benefits as well as the significant value NeoGuide can bring to advancing this new technique,” said Austin Noll, president and CEO of NeoGuide. “Currently, the success of NOTES procedures is limited by the use of existing endoscopic technologies developed for non-NOTES applications. We intend to be among the first to offer technologies specifically built for NOTES, enabling physicians to truly deliver on the NOTES promise.”

NOTES procedures are now conducted with traditional flexible endoscopes, which were designed for use in endoluminal procedures such as colonoscopy and upper GI endoscopy. Due to their design, these scopes restrict the effectiveness of the NOTES method. NeoGuide expects its proprietary robotic endoscopic technology, which was originally developed for application in colonoscopy, to provide unparalleled access to the abdominal and thoracic cavities as well as a stable, force-bearing platform from which surgical tasks can be performed.

Noll added, “We believe that NeoGuide’s technology will change the way NOTES procedures are performed. Given the significance of this market opportunity, we have decided to move away from colonoscopy and put an intense, company-wide focus on NOTES.”
