IST Study Demonstrates Benefits of Minimally Invasive Lumbar Fusion Surgery

MANSFIELD, MA--(Healthcare Sales & Marketing Network)--Dec 18, 2007 -- Innovative Spinal Technologies, Inc. (IST), a leading developer of the world's most advanced motion preservation and minimally invasive treatments for spinal disorders, announced positive results of a multi-site study demonstrating the clinical benefits of the Paramount(TM) Pedicle Screw (PSS). Results of the study show that a minimally invasive fusion procedure with the Paramount pedicle screw procedure results in significantly less blood loss, operative time, and pain as compared to conventional open pedicle screw procedures. These results were presented at the Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery meeting in San Diego, California.

"The study provides compelling data that clearly demonstrate the patient benefits of less pain and faster recovery combined with the hospital benefits of reduced OR time, shorter stay and greater efficiency of the Paramount System," said Scott Schorer, President and CEO of IST. "IST's Paramount System is designed to specifically meet the demanding requirements of posterior lumbar fusion procedures by streamlining and simplifying the overall procedure," concluded Mr. Schorer.

The retrospective study compared minimally invasive pedicle screw fusions to open pedicle screw fusions in 191 patients at multiple U.S. facilities. Data was collected retrospectively from clinical and hospital charts of 150 MIS patients and 41 open procedure patients. The retrospective analysis revealed that operative time for the Paramount PSS MIS procedure was 97 minutes, compared to a procedural time of 157 minutes (38.2% decrease) for corresponding open fusion procedures. In addition, blood loss was shown to be significantly less with the MIS procedure at 56cc versus 229cc for the open procedure (75.5% decrease).

"This study demonstrates the significant tangible benefits of using an MIS procedure for posterior lumbar fusion," commented Dr. Ali Araghi, PHOENIX, Arizona. "The Paramount MIS System enabled me to reduce procedure time and reduce the length of my patients' hospital stay. This reinforces my belief that I am giving my patients the best treatment option possible."

The study's encouraging results should be welcome news to the more than one million patients requiring treatment for common disorders of the spine. The average length of the post-operative hospital stay decreased by 40% to 2.24 days for patients undergoing the MIS procedure, versus an average stay of 3.73 days for patients undergoing the open procedure. A 61.81% improvement in Visual Analog Scale (VAS) back pain score and 64.61% improvement in VAS leg pain score were also reported. The patient benefits of less pain and faster recovery combined with the hospital benefits of reduced OR time, shorter stay and greater efficiency of MIS make the Paramount System an ideal choice when considering a Balanced Healthcare Scorecard.
