Cook Medical Advances Staple Line Reinforcement with Self-Adhesive Surgisis Biodesign
Surgisis(R) Biodesign(TM) Staple Line Reinforcement Improves Staple Line Strength and Helps Reduce Excessive Bleeding and Leaks in Bariatric and Thoracic ProceduresBLOOMINGTON, Ind.--(HSMN NewsFeed)--Cook Medical offers a significant innovation to improve bariatric and thoracic surgical procedures with the U.S. launch of the self-adhesive Surgisis Biodesign Staple Line Reinforcement. Offering surgeons an ease of use that was previously unavailable, the self-adhesive graft is a natural solution for the reinforcement of gastric staple lines during gastric bypass procedures. The graft is designed to improve staple line strength while decreasing bleeding, leakage and the subsequent risk of infection.
Surgisis Biodesign Staple Line Reinforcement incorporates the best attributes of a biologic graft – resistance to infection and complete remodeling – with the added benefits of moderate price, ease of use and ample shelf life for on-site availability. Upon deployment, the graft provides a seal along the staple line. Then, over time, the graft communicates with the patient’s body, signaling surrounding tissue to grow across the scaffold where the tissue is stapled. While supporting the tissue, the naturally derived staple line reinforcement begins to remodel into strong, fully vascularised tissue, providing a secure reinforcement.
According to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, 177,600 gastric bypass surgeries were performed in the United States in 2006. Gastrointestinal leakage and staple line failure are among the most serious risks of gastric bypass surgery and can result in significant morbidity and even mortality. Surgisis Biodesign Staple Line Reinforcement has been designed to reduce the possibility of these complications by strengthening the staple line structure and thereby reducing bleeding and the risk of leakage.
Alexander P. Nagle, M.D., director, Bariatric Surgery at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, states, “I now use the Surgisis Biodesign Staple Line Reinforcement exclusively in my bariatric practice. It is easy to load on the stapler and the adhesive holds firmly to the jaws allowing manipulation of the stapler. The reinforcement provides an increased level of assurance that there will be no GI leakage or excessive bleeding around the staple line. The fact that the product remodels and is replaced by the patient’s own tissue is also an attractive feature for increased patient safety.”
“Excessive bleeding and leaks during bariatric surgery can prolong procedure time and lead to complications for the patient,” adds Andy Cron, vice president of Cook Medical’s Surgery strategic business unit. “We are pleased to introduce this latest addition to the Surgisis Biodesign family, as the Staple Line Reinforcement enhances ease of use for physicians and significantly minimizes trauma to the patient.”
Cook Medical’s Surgisis Biodesign product line provides innovative surgical products for several procedural areas, including hernia repair, fistula repair, plastic & reconstructive/ENT, staple line reinforcement, Peyronie’s repair, continence restoration, dural repair and pelvic floor repair.
