Tornier and Lifecell Enter into Agreement for New Tissue Repair TechnologyTornier To Distribute LifeCell’s New Tissue Matrix for Orthopaedic Applications
EDINA, MINNESTOTA – April 2, 2008 - (HSMN NewsFeed)--Tornier, Inc., a global leader in extremity orthopaedics, and LifeCell Corporation announced today that the two companies have entered into an exclusive distribution agreement focused on orthopaedic and podiatric applications for LifeCell’s new reconstructive tissue matrix. The agreement provides for the two companies to collaborate on the development of certain orthopaedic soft tissue repair applications for which Tornier will distribute the product to its orthopaedic and podiatric surgeon customer base under the “Conexa™” private label brand. Currently, LifeCell markets and distributes the tissue matrix for general soft tissue repair applications under Strattice™ Reconstructive Tissue Matrix.
Doug Kohrs, President and CEO of Tornier, commented, “We are very excited to have the opportunity to partner with LifeCell to extend the availability of its innovative porcine-derived tissue matrix technology to our surgeon customers. Our collaboration with LifeCell further evidences Tornier’s commitment to new biomaterials and biologic technologies to improve clinical outcomes for both soft and hard tissue repairs.”
LifeCell’s extensive animal studies and early clinical investigation in general soft tissue repair applications have demonstrated that the new porcine-derived tissue matrix performs essentially equivalent to its flagship human tissue matrix, AlloDerm™, demonstrating that it allows for tissue regeneration. The LifeCell Conexa™ tissue matrix is available sterile, ready to use, comes in multiple sizes and is an excellent option for orthopaedic soft tissue repair and reconstructive applications. LifeCell, based in Branchburg, New Jersey and a pioneer and leader in tissue repair technology, received its initial FDA 510(k) clearance for general surgical soft tissue repair applications in June, 2007, and received an additional 510(k) clearance for certain orthopaedic applications in December, 2007.
Tornier develops and markets orthopaedic medical devices designed to restore function and return patients to an active and healthy lifestyle. The company's comprehensive and innovative upper extremity product line include the Aequalis® Total Shoulder System, the Latitude Total Elbow and the CoverLoc™ Distal Radius Fracture Management System. Tornier’s extensive portfolio of foot and ankle products include the NexFix™ system for reconstructive foot surgery and the Salto Talaris™ Anatomic total ankle prostheses. Tornier has also established collaborations with innovative materials companies such as BioSurface Engineering Technologies, Bioretec, and Tepha in order to access novel non-metal technologies that may better address unmet soft and hard tissue repair needs of surgeons and their patients.
