AANS/CNS and BrainLAB Announce Winner of 2008 International Research Fellowship
WESTCHESTER, Ill., April 24 (HSMN NewsFeed) -- AANS/CNS Section on Tumors and BrainLAB today announced the winner of the 2008 International Research Fellowship. Xiang Wang, MD, from the People's Republic of China, was awarded the fellowship for his proposal, "The Trafficking of Bone Marrow Derived mesenchymal stem cells in Brain Tumor Angiogenesis and Stromal Development."Dr. Wang will receive a $50,000 stipend to conduct research in his proposed field of study in the laboratory of Victor C-K Tse, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at Stanford University. The program will last for one year.
Started in 2006, the fellowship enables international neurosurgeons or graduating residents from outside the United States and Canada to perform clinical, translational or basic research in the field of neurosurgical oncology in a clinical or laboratory setting within the United States. Applications for the 2008 fellowship were received from Brazil, China, Honduras, India, Iran, Italy, Japan, Nigeria and Turkey.
The goal of the fellowship is to foster collaborative research between the U.S. and international neurosurgeons. BrainLAB funds the fellowship through an educational grant and the program receives further support from dedicated U.S. institutions (Investigators), which provide the space and supplies for the applicant during the study period. The winner of the 2007 fellowship, Kazuhiko Kurozumi, MD, from Okayama, Japan, is currently at The Ohio State University laboratory of E. Antonio Chiocca, MD, PhD.
Dr. Kurozumi recently had his paper, "Effect of Tumor Micro-environment Modulation on the Efficacy of Oncolytic Virus Therapy," published in The Journal of the National Cancer Institute (JNCI 99:1768-81, 2007). His fellowship will be completed in June 2008.
According to Michael McDermott, MD, chairman of the AANS/CNS Section on Tumors, "Partnering with BrainLAB for this fellowship is a valuable contribution to the field of neuro-oncology. We hope to continue this collaborative effort for many years as we work together to make critical advances in the diagnosis and treatment of CNS tumors."
