Healthcare Industry News: i-STAT
News Release - May 14, 2008
University of Virginia Health System invests in IMRISneuro, the next generation of surgical imaging technologyWINNIPEG, May 14 (Healthcare Sales & Marketing Network) - IMRIS today announced the sale of IMRISneuro to University of Virginia Health System (UVA), one of the top neuroscience centers in the United States. Delivery and installation is scheduled for 2009. The purchase is contingent upon the receipt of a Certificate of Public Need from the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The only one of its kind in the world, IMRISneuro incorporates a moveable high field MRI with a state-of-the art integration platform, IMRISmatrix, allowing the surgical team to scan, view and share critical patient information during a procedure. At UVA, the MRI will move between two operating theatres within a three-room configuration, providing leading edge, multi-functional capabilities to the hospital's neuroscience team.
Professor Mark Shaffrey, MD and Chairman of the Neurosurgery Depart at UVA commented, "There is substantial evidence that the more of a primary brain tumor that can be removed during surgery, the better the outcome for the patient. The IMRIS technology will enhance our ability to view and evaluate tumors, without having to move the patient during surgery. This will be of great benefit to patients because we will be able to make decisions about treatment in a much quicker timeframe and possibly reduce the need for additional surgery at a later time."
As of today, the IMRIS high-field, intra-operative MRI will be the only one within the Commonwealth of Virginia and a surrounding multi-STATe region. David Graves, President and CEO of the company said, "It is a testament to our product, IMRISneuro, to be the chosen iMRI technology of one of the leading neuroscience centers in the world. We are confident it can make a major contribution towards helping UVA continue to provide their patients with the highest standard of treatment and care."
IMRIS is a global leader in providing fully integrated, advanced surgical imaging solutions designed to measurably improve patient outcomes. The company's flagship product, IMRISneuro, utilizes patented technology that allows a high field MRI scanner to move in to the operating room on demand, providing imaging during the surgical procedure without compromising patient safety. This unique and innovative system has been validated by leading neurosurgeons for use in world-class neuroscience centers.
