Healthcare law veteran brings 20 years of experience, comprehensive business and legal background to the company

SKANEATELES FALLS, N.Y.--(HSMN NewsFeed)--Julie Shimer, president and CEO for Welch Allyn, recently announced that Gregory Porter has been named senior vice president and general counsel for the 93-year-old Skaneateles Falls–based medical device manufacturer. Porter joins the company with extensive experience in healthcare law, healthcare regulation and executive leadership.

“With his diverse background that incorporates comprehensive legal advisement and executive-level management, Greg brings a valued perspective as we continue to bolster our international compliance and regulatory systems,” said Shimer. “We are proud to welcome him to the Welch Allyn leadership team.”

In his new role, Porter will be responsible for overseeing the legal, quality/regulatory and government affairs groups for Welch Allyn and will serve as a central contact point for employees, management and the board of directors. Additionally, his new position will involve acting as an advisor to senior management and serving as secretary to the board of directors.

“In addition to managing our internal legal, intellectual property and government affairs staff, he will develop and recommend how we anticipate and address emerging legislative and regulatory issues that may impact the key elements of our strategic plan,” added Shimer. “Greg will be critical as we further strengthen our strong commitment to meeting the highest standards for quality, safety and efficiency in the global medical device manufacturing marketplace.”

Most recently, Porter has served as co-founder, CEO and board vice chairman of Verispan, a healthcare information company founded in a joint venture between Quintiles Transnational Corp. and McKesson Corp. He has also held positions as a partner with the Moore & Van Allen Law Firm, visiting lecturer at the University of North Carolina School of Law, and law clerk for U.S. District Judge William Matthew Byrne.

Porter earned a juris doctorate (JD) degree with high honors from the University of North Carolina School of Law where he served as editor-in-chief of the North Carolina Law Review.
