Study Published in Orthopedics Finds New Custom-Fit Technique Addresses Shortcomings of Current Total Knee Replacement Techniques
First Peer-Reviewed Study to Report on Intra-Operative Use of Custom Fit Guides to Restore Patient's Pre-Arthritic Knee AlignmentALAMEDA, Calif.--(HSMN NewsFeed)--According to a study published this month in the peer-reviewed journal Orthopedics, a new custom-fit approach to total knee arthroplasty (TKA) showed positive results at three-months post-surgery and reliably aligned the knee – showing that this approach may address the shortcomings of conventional and computer-assisted techniques. In the study, custom-fit (OtisKnee®) assisted TKA had no adverse events, a short operative time, a high return of function and motion, high patient satisfaction at one month and three months follow-up, and repeatable alignment. Forty-eight consecutive patients were included in this study, the first peer-reviewed study to report on intra-operative use of custom-fit guides to restore the natural alignment of a patient's knee.
“Shortcomings of current conventional instrumentation and computer-assisted approaches for total knee arthroplasty warrant the development of a new approach,” said lead author Stephen M. Howell, M.D., a world-recognized orthopedic surgeon in Sacramento, CA, and an adjunct professor of mechanical engineering at the University of California at Davis. “The encouraging outcomes of this initial study, which introduces and evaluates custom-fit total knee arthroplasty using OtisKnee, make the case for further investigation of the custom-fit technique, which was designed to restore the natural pre-arthritic alignment of the limb and normal kinematics.”

Using OtisKnee, orthopedic surgeons can for the first time precisely match the size and placement of the knee implant to the patient’s unique and normal (non-arthritic) anatomy. Based on OtisMed’s proprietary ShapeMatch® technology, this new tailored approach provides surgeons with patient specific-cutting guides that allow them to optimize implant fit and alignment while preserving more bone and ligaments.
Since its limited U.S. launch in June of 2007, the OtisKnee technique has been performed by more than 400 surgeons on more than 7,000 patients. OtisKnee surgeons and patients have reported quicker recovery times, less pain and greater return to function than with traditional and computer-assisted total knee replacement techniques. OtisKnee surgeons have also reported reduced surgical times, simplified surgical set-up as well as quicker patient discharge.
