SurgiCount's Safety-Sponge System Reaches 200,000th Procedure Milestone Without a Reported Retained Sponge

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 22 -- (Healthcare Sales & Marketing Network) -- SurgiCount Medical, Inc., a division of Patient Safety Technologies, Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: PSTX ), today announced that over 6 million Safety-Sponges(TM) have been successfully used in over 200,000 procedures without a single retained sponge incident reported. The average incidence of a retained sponge is somewhere between 1 and 1500 procedures to 1 in 9000 procedures.

The clear benefits of computer-assisted sponge counting are increasing the popularity and acceptance of the Safety-Sponge System. It remains the only product independently studied & clinically proven to reduce retained sponges. As a non-RFID product, it is free from the critical interference issues recently published by JAMA. The Safety-Sponge System(TM) also remains the lowest-cost solution on the market as well as the most widely used solution for retained surgical sponges.

As was announced earlier this year, October 1st signaled the end of both the government's and many insurance companies' reimbursement of the costs associated with the additional surgery that is often required to remove a retained sponge.

"In today's 'never event' environment, the burden of proof rests with the medical institution to not just deliver a higher standard of care, but to prove it by showing evidence of successful outcomes," said Bill Adams, CEO of SurgiCount Medical. "The momentum being created by the continuing success rate of the Safety-Sponge System, combined with the increased pressure on hospitals to eliminate retained sponges, leads us to believe the company is very well positioned for aggressive growth going forward."

The Safety-Sponge(TM) System is comprised of three parts:

-- A comprehensive line of uniquely identifiable surgical sponges and towels (Safety-Sponges)

-- Touch-screen scanning devices (SurgiCounters)

-- A networked database application (Citadel) that allows for the complete review, management and analysis of the count reports generated
