World's First Totality MIS Corpectomy Procedure with Globus XPand(R) Cage

AUDUBON, Pa., Nov. 17 -- (Healthcare Sales & Marketing Network) -- Globus Medical, Inc., the largest privately held spinal implant manufacturer in the world, today announced that its XPand® expandable corpectomy cage was utilized in a totally MIS (minimally invasive surgery) corpectomy procedure. The surgery, performed at UCLA Medical Center by Dr. Larry Khoo, exemplifies Globus' ability to combine surgeon input with engineering prowess to improve patient care.

Globus' XPand®, available in both titanium and PEEK, has been used in more than 3,300 cases for trauma or tumor surgeries. The expandable PEEK version, the only such implant of its kind, has been implanted in over 1,000 patients, and permits radiographic assessment of tumor reoccurrence during post-operative care. The XPand® system provides an infinitely adjustable height due to its unique design coupled with specialized expansion instrumentation. XPand® provides a broad set of attributes (two material choices, five implant foot print options and multiple sagittal profiles) and has the flexibility to meet the needs of challenging cases.

Dr. Khoo utilized three different Globus systems to achieve this landmark case: the XPand® corpectomy Spacer System, the MARS(TM) retractor system and the PIVOT® MIS stabilization system.

"This MIS procedure for trauma patients provides a milder treatment option for a set of patients that already have gone through an ordeal prior to their surgery," states Dr. Khoo, Associate Professor at the UCLA Comprehensive Spine Center. He adds, "The lateral extracavitary approach provides a ready alternative to traditional front-back procedures for the treatment of many thoracic and lumbar spinal lesions with savings in OR time, blood loss and postoperative complications with surgical experience."

"The versatility of the XPand® system continues to grow as more surgeons incorporate it into their practices," says Bill Rhoda, Director of Product Development, Intervertebral Fixation. "This is one of the countless examples of our ability to rapidly adapt instrumentation to address a surgeon's unmet clinical needs and provides the inspiration for the next generation of products. Our ability to quickly deliver a response to surgeon needs has been a cornerstone of our success as a company and in this case opens up an entirely new treatment option."
