HydroCision Announces Launch of the SpineJet DL Handpieces and Entry into the Double Digit Growth Lateral Spinal Fusion Market

BILLERICA, Mass.--(HSMN NewsFeed)--HydroCision, Inc. ( announced today the launch of the SpineJet® DL fusion handpieces for the new minimally invasive direct lateral fusion procedure. With this launch the company will capitalize on the double digit growth of the lateral segment of the minimally invasive spinal fusion market. “Spinal surgeons are rapidly adopting the lateral approach,” states Doug Daniels, President and CEO of HydroCision, “as it is less disruptive to anatomical structures and tissues, requires less O.R. time reducing the risk of surgical site infection, and results in faster patient recovery. With the addition of the SpineJet DL Handpieces we will now be able to offer instrument versatility for all spinal fusion approaches.”

The Company’s family of fluidjet products empowers surgeons to simultaneously cut, ablate, and remove hard and soft tissue quickly, safely, and effectively— without the collateral thermal or mechanical trauma of other surgical modalities.

Daniels adds, “Patients today are seeking out surgeons that perform new minimally invasive procedures like the direct lateral interbody fusion approach. This has led to rapid adoption of these new and evolving techniques by a growing number of spine surgeons, in turn, driving the demand for new instruments that allow surgeons to work through progressively, smaller incisions.”

“Working through a small portal at a greater distance from the disc space creates many challenges in terms of being able to remove sufficient disc material to allow insertion of a large enough bone graft to promote successful fusion and good clinical outcomes,” says Louis Keppler, MD, Co-Director, The Spine and Orthopedic Institute at St. Vincent Charity Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio. “Our hand movements are restricted by the working tube and conventional instruments lack the angle and tactile feedback required to access and prepare the entire disc space.” Dr. Keppler adds, ”I believe the SpineJet DL provides the power, tactile feedback and angle needed to safely, quickly, and effectively better prepare the disc space for insertion of a larger graft for optimum fusion outcome with significantly fewer passes by vital structures minimizing the risk of neural injury.”
